The role of traditional rulers and community leaders in promoting girls' right to early education cannot be overemphasized. This critical issue took center stage on Day 2 of the ongoing Community Awareness Advocacy for the Establishment of the Girl Child's Right to Early Education in Imo State, organized by my office and the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) in partnership with the Government of Imo State.
In his welcome address, Prof. Simon Akpama Ibor, the Executive Secretary of NMEC, emphasized that the outdated notion that a girl's education ends in the kitchen must be abolished. He stressed the importance of providing equal educational opportunities for all children, regardless of gender, as education is both a fundamental human right and a catalyst for societal development.
Highlight of the day was an interactive session where traditional rulers shared their efforts to support girls' education in their communities. These efforts included awareness campaigns, scholarships, and mentorship programs to help young girls achieve their educational goals. HRH Eze Lucky Okoro PhD, the Secretary to the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, representing Eze Imo, HRM, Eze Dr. E. C. Okeke CFR, lauded the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting girls' education across the State.
The discussion also reinforced the need for increased collaboration among the Government, private sector, and individuals to ensure every girl child receives quality basic education. The advocacy program continues to highlight that investing in girls' education yields significant returns; not only for individual girls but also for families, communities, and society at large. By breaking down barriers to education and challenging traditional mindsets, communities can work together to build a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
