On February 18, 2025, the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), in collaboration with the Imo State Government, my office, and 10 Miles Resources Limited, launched a Community Awareness Advocacy for the Establishment of the Girl Child’s Right to Early Education in Imo State at Embassy Classic Hotel, Owerri.
The advocacy workshop aimed to promote girls' rights to early education while highlighting its numerous benefits. It specifically targeted parents as the child's first educators. The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Nkechinyere Ugwu UNJP, represented me at the event. I emphasized the fundamental importance of providing every girl child with basic education and the urgent need for parents to protect their children. Additionally, we discussed strategies to reduce the prevalence of child labour in our society. Education remains a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, reducing child marriage, and creating opportunities for young girls, enabling them to make informed decisions about their lives.
The training session served as a platform to raise awareness of the long-term benefits of educating girls, address cultural barriers that hinder their access to education, and promote community engagement in supporting girls' educational rights. By doing so, we empower families to actively shape the future of their daughters.
We remain committed to ensuring that every girl in Imo State has access to quality education, enabling her to reach her full potential and contribute positively to society.
