The World Autism Awareness Day is a day to celebrate the unique perspective of Autistic people and challenge harmful stereotypes. This year's theme is, "Inclusion in the Workplace:Challenges and Opportunities in a Post-Pandemic World".
The aim of the celebration is also to educate, communicate and celebrate differences in an inclusive society where individuals with autism live fully through connection and acceptance.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Autism is a complex, lifelong developmental disability which can cause difficulties in communication, interaction with others and experiences in everyday situations. Symptoms present from infancy with varied extents from person to person.
It is pertinent to mention that autism is not a disability, rather, it’s a different ability. Raising awareness will help people understand and accept those who are suffering from autism, support them, and spread kindness. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.
Today is a day to recognize and celebrate people with autism's right to self-determination, independence, education and employment on an equal basis with others. As we celebrate World Autism Awareness Day, let us keep in mind, the challenges they face and show our support by creating a kinder, more inclusive world for people with autism.
Happy #WorldAutismDay
