In continuing the sensitization of young people against the evils of sexual and gender-based violence, my office, in partnership with WARIF - Women at Risk International Foundation, organized a Boys Conversation Chat—an initiative aimed at empowering male adolescents to become protectors, not bystanders or perpetrators, of sexual and gender-based violence. The interactive session, held on 17th December, 2024, at the Imo State Government House, brought together male secondary school students in an open dialogue with facilitators. They discussed the urgent need for social transformation to address the persistent challenge of gender-based violence at its roots. Through carefully structured training sessions, students gained insights into the profound and long-lasting trauma caused by sexual violence and rape. The program helped dismantle the culture of silence, guilt, and shame that often surrounds these sensitive issues, providing a safe and supportive environment for open, honest discussions about consent, respect, and gender equality.
The initiative sought to reshape attitudes, challenge toxic masculinity, and cultivate a generation of males committed to creating a safer, more respectful society. It emphasized the irreplaceable role boys and young men play in combating gender-based violence and protecting vulnerable populations, particularly young girls and women. #NoMeansNo #WARIF #NoToGenderBasedViolence
