Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) remains a deeply rooted harmful cultural practice challenging our State. Despite relentless efforts by the Government and other Stakeholders since 2014, the practice continues to persist. On December 4th, 2024, in Owerri, I emphasized the critical need for increased awareness to end FGM in Imo State during a one-day sensitization workshop organized by the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, in collaboration with UNFPA Nigeria. The workshop aimed to create and mobilize a pool of champions to end FGM and commemorate the 16-Day Activism against gender-based violence (GBV).
Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Nkechinyere Ugwu UNJP, I urged civil society organizations (CSO), traditional rulers, appointees, and citizens to actively report and prevent these harmful practices. I stressed the importance of extending the campaign to younger generations to educate them about the dangers involved. The event featured notable speakers, including HRH Clinton Eze, who shared his community's efforts to prevent FGM. I commend UNFPA, CSOs, former Director of NOA Imo State, Mr. Vitus Ekeocha, Barr. Mrs. Egbuka Ndieze, the speakers, and attendees for their support in ending FGM and GBV in Imo State. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for our girls and women.
