Today, November 25th, the World marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women to serve as a reminder of the pervasive issue of gender-based violence that continues to plague societies worldwide. It is a day to reflect on the progress made, acknowledge the challenges that persist, and renew our commitment to ending this scourge. The impact of violence against women is far-reaching and devastating. It can cause physical harm, including injuries and disabilities. Emotional trauma, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is also a common consequence of violence. Additionally, violence against women can lead to social isolation, economic instability, and even death.
Despite the overwhelming prevalence of violence against women, it remains a largely hidden issue. Many women and girls suffer in silence, afraid to speak out due to fear of retaliation, shame, or stigma. However, it's time to break the silence. It's time to create a world where women and girls can live free from harassment, violence, and fear. Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we must challenge harmful gender norms and stereotypes that perpetuate inequality and contribute to violence. The Imo State Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) - The Deborah House located at the Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ISPHCDA), Umuguma, New Owerri is a space for survivors to speak out, seek support, and access justice.
Let us commit ourselves to creating a future where equality, respect, and dignity are the cornerstones of our societies. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a brighter future for all. #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #InternationalDayForTheEliminationOfViolenceAgainstWomen
