Today, we mark the International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims, 2021.
This day is observed on 24th March every year to pay tribute to late Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero who was murdered on 24 March 1980 while actively engaging in criticizing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador.
Unfortunately, today, 41 years after, same fate continues to befall individuals/activists who dare speak up inorder to shape our democracy and better humanity around the world and Africa, in particular.
.In the words of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, we must recognize the courage of human rights defenders everywhere and let us commit to protect those who seek truth and justice, and provide victims with effective remedies and restore their dignity.
In promotion of this annual event, individuals and governments are encouraged to dedicate the day to honouring victims of human rights violations by promoting the importance of the right to truth and justice.
Furthermore, we are enjoined to pay tribute to those who are devoted and even those who have lost their lives in the struggle to promote and protect human rights for all. They are our heroes and may their struggle for a just society never be in vain.
I celebrate our heroes, activists, dead and alive.
