At the funeral of Christian Obi, fondly known as "Power" and former coach of Heartland FC, held on October 25, 2024, in Ibiasoegbe, Oru West LGA, Imo State, I encouraged his family to uphold his impactful legacy. I noted that, while death is inevitable, it is a life devoid of positive influence that is truly the end. Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Nkechinyere Ugwu UNJP, I extended condolences to his wife, children, and family, honouring the memory of the "always cheerful coach." Christian Obi was a notable figure in Nigerian sports, remembered for his contributions to the Nigeria U-20 team that won bronze at the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship. In a memorable third-place match, he stepped up as goalkeeper and led Nigeria to victory over the Soviet Union with crucial saves during a penalty shootout. This achievement marked Nigeria's first podium finish in the tournament.
I pray for strength and comfort for his family, particularly his wife, Mrs. Ejimofor Ify Obi, the APC Women Leader in Oru West LGA, and the entire Obi family. May Coach Obi’s enduring legacy continue to inspire all who knew him.
