Today, we celebrate World Tuberculosis Day.

A day to raise public awareness on the devastating health and social consequences of tuberculosis (TB) and break age-long myths about the disease.

The theme for this year is "The Clock is Ticking".

TB remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers and as we battle the global effects of the COVID-19 on lives and livelihoods, it is pertinent also to note that TB remains one of the underlying health conditions which makes people susceptible to the adverse health effects of the Coronavirus.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that affects our lungs and can be fatal if not treated in time. The TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. Sometimes, it shows up without exhibiting symptoms.

The clock is ticking! With early diagnosis, medication & proper treatment, tuberculosis can be completely cured.

Maintaining hygiene & regular checkup is essential in its treatment. Other preventive options include: avoid smoking, eat nutritiously for strong immunity, avoid exposure to people with active TB and visit a doctor for early diagnosis & treatment.

As we mark #WorldTBDay, Governments at all levels and Nongovernmental organisations alike, must ensure equitable access to prevention and care in line with WHO’s drive towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.
