A delegation from the Imo State Government, led by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Amarachi Chyna Iwuanyanwu, Commissioner for Women Affairs Hon. Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, and His Royal Majesty Eze (Dr.) Ambassador Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, is currently in Ghana to rescue and repatriate young girls from Imo State who were victims of human and sex trafficking, as revealed in viral social media videos on Friday.
They are collaborating with the Acting High Commissioner of the Nigeria High Commission in Ghana, HE Ambassador Adeoye Adeoye, and the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) , Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa OON. According to the NIDCOM Chairman, the rescue of the young women was facilitated by the Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), the umbrella association for Nigerians residing in Ghana.
Eight of the rescued girls are from Imo State, while three are from Plateau State. They are now safe and secure, following the arrest of the suspected trafficker, who is currently in custody and will face prosecution if found guilty. We extend our profound gratitude to the Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma CON, for his support in facilitating the rescue and rehabilitation of these trafficked citizens.
