In a concerted and passionate effort to protect widows in Imo State, my office, in conjunction with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, intervened in a reported case of victimization involving a widow from Umueze Alaoma-Ntuata in Atta Ikeduru Local Government Area.
The widow, who lost her husband in 1989, has endured immense hardship and cruelty at the hands of her late husband's first son. Despite being thrown out of her husband's house, she continues to face harassment and intimidation, living at the mercy of 'good Samaritans'.
Moved by the widow's plight, a delegation led by the Honourable Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, UNJP, visited her in her isolated and dilapidated home, witnessing firsthand the deplorable conditions she endures. With empathy and determination, she sought out the eldest son and, in his absence, spoke with his wife, urging her to advocate for peace and end the widow's suffering.
The Commissioner also met with the traditional ruler of the community, emphasizing the importance of protecting all subjects, regardless of social status. She assured the widow and other widows in the community that my office and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare are deeply committed to their welfare and will ensure their protection under the law.
Consequently, to resettle the widow, my office has resolved to build a home for her, affirming the Government's dedication to upholding the rights and dignity of all widows and the indigents in the State.
