As part of my efforts to promote skill acquisition and rehabilitation among inmates at the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Owerri, I embarked on an outreach visit to the facility. Represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu UNJP, I reaffirmed the Imo State government's commitment to supporting the center's initiatives, under the leadership of my husband, His Excellency Dist. Senator Hope Uzodimma.
I expressed my appreciation to the dedicated officers at the center for their efforts and urged them to continue their good work. My vision is for every inmate released from Owerri prison to possess a valuable skill, acquired during their stay in the Centre, which will facilitate their rehabilitation and easier reintegration into the society upon release.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of training equipment, including hair dryers, barbing equipment/clippers, electric sewing machines, and commercial sewing machines, to the inmates. Additionally, the inmates showcased an impressive array of products they had produced, such as shoes, liquid soap, air fresheners, amongst other items.
In his response, the Deputy Comptroller of Corrections in charge of the medium security custodian center, Mr. Eke C. Eke, expressed gratitude to the Government for its support, acknowledging that the equipment will significantly contribute to the rehabilitation and reintegration of the inmates into society.
