On May 3, 2024, I received Nemat Hajeebhoy, the UNICEF Nigeria Chief of Nutrition, and her team, along with Rev. Sis. Dr. Maria-Joannes Uzoma, Executive Secretary of Imo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ISPHCDA), and consultants from the World Health Organization (WHO) in the State.
Rev. Sis. Uzoma expressed gratitude on behalf of the ISPHCDA for our continuous support in addressing health needs, especially at the grassroots level. She briefed me on the upcoming launch of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine and the micronutrient multivitamin policy, in which Imo State is one of the six pilot states. Additionally, she announced that Nigeria is close to approving and implementing a policy where the micronutrient multivitamin from Vitamin Angels will be the sole routine drug provided to antenatal women, with Imo State selected as one of the six pilot states for this program.
Neemat Hajeebhoy from UNICEF discussed the implementation of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) for pregnant women, targeting a reduction in the high rates of maternal and infant mortality. The Nutrition Chief noted that Imo State leads with 80 percent usage of MMS, compared to the national coverage of 30 percent. She commended Governor Hope Uzodimma’s swift responses and called for policies to address malnutrition effectively.
Dr. Alfred Ineife from WHO updated us on accomplishments, such as coordinating the HPV vaccine plan and developing outreach strategies for girls aged 9-14.
I commended their efforts and pledged full support for social mobilization and the vaccination program’s success.
