IMO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY PASSES BILL EMPOWERING WOMEN TO INHERIT & SHARE IN FAMILY PROPERTY

In my years of working as a humanitarian and an advocate of women, of the many urgent concerns we face is how our women are typically barred by customary law from owning or inheriting land. Very few laws protect our women, therefore, it has always been extremely important to my husband and I to change this narrative or to support those who are trying.

A few days ago, one of the most remarkable partners of the 3R Administration, the 9th House of the Imo State House Of Assembly, passed a new bill titled: "A Bill For A Law To Provide For The Right Of Female Person To Inherit And Share In Family Property And For Other Related Matter.”

The Bill which will be signed into law by my dear husband in a few weeks brings about several improvements for our beloved Imo women. As soon as it is signed into law, our women can legally inherit property, and if their rights are violated, they have the legitimate right to file a lawsuit to demand fair distribution.

I am truly delighted by this and I applaud the efforts of the current House of Assembly for passing this bill among other People-focused Bills and Motions that have made a significant difference in many people's lives in Imo State and placed Imo society on a foundation that offers everyone a chance to achieve their potential and pursue their goals.

Thank you to the Chief Sponsor of the Bill, Hon Barrister Dominic Ezerioha, the Speaker Of Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Emeka Nduka and the following co-sponsors; Hon Chief Eddy Obinna, Hon Samuel Otuibe, Hon Arthur Egwim, Hon Johnson Duru, Hon Ngozi Obiefule, Hon Uju Onwudiwe, Hon Solomon Anukam, Hon Philip Ejiogu, Hon Philip Okotie, Hon Anyadike Nwosu, Hon Chigozie Nwaneri, Hon Frank Ugboma, Hon Uche Ogbuagu, Hon Michael Crown for passing the Bill with such guts and bravery.
