#REPOST from @savechildrenng
In honour of the 2022#WorldBreastfeedingWeek, members of the Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum (NIGWF) @ngw_forum, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) @ngfsecretariat, and Save The Children International (SCI) @savechildrenng held a joint webinar moderated by Maryam Laushi to emphasize their dedication to improving maternal protection and raising awareness about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for infants.
During the webinar, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Secretariat’s Health Desk delivered a status report on its efforts to speed up its commitments to promote the required six-month exclusive breastfeeding for infants in Nigeria using the NGF Nutrition Scorecard.
The Nutrition Scorecard is a Data Visualization Tool (DVT) created to hold State Governors responsible for several nutrition pledges; such as the development of functioning nurseries (including nursing areas) in Government buildings and protection for new parents.
The distinguished keynote speakers, the First Lady of Ekiti State and Chair of Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum, Her Excellency, Mrs Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi and the First Lady of Kebbi State, Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, also discussed their State’s capacity in providing and sustaining breastfeeding-friendly environments for families.
It is reassuring to know that, despite the various stages they are in, all thirty-six states have made notable progress in establishing protocols designed to support our parents.
The Health Advocacy and Communications for SCI, Mr. Innocent Ifedilichukwu, offered his final remarks after emphasising that mothers require a nurturing environment. Additionally, he discussed stepping up advocacy efforts for implementing paternity leave so fathers can assist their wives throughout this process.
Following today’s discussion, I am convinced that the NGF Nutrition Scorecard should be fully implemented to support and promote exclusive breastfeeding in our beloved nation.
