Earlier today, my office had an interesting and informative meeting with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the United Nations Sexual and Reproductive Health Agency to share its proposal on the launch of “The Movement for Good to End FGM” plan in Imo State.

During the meeting held in the presence of Victor Atuchukwu, UNICEF Child Protection Specialist, Dr. Agatha Nzeribe, a Director at UNICEF, and the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups, Hon. Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, the plans for two high-level events to take place in Imo State to raise awareness of the risks and harmful consequences of FGM on girls and women, was carefully discussed.

This project between my office and these organizations aims to challenge the misconceptions of FGM, highlight the legal prohibition and consequences of the violation of FGM and protect our girls at risk of FGM. Together, I am certain we will go a long way in breaking the silence around this act of violence on our girls across our beloved Imo, State.
