International Widows Day is a United Nations(UN) day of action to highlight and address the challenges, discrimination, faced by widows. The theme of this year's commemoration is, “Invisible Women, Invisible Problems".

Widows are the pillars in the absence of fatherly valour when the occasion demands parental multitasking. So today, we salute the courage, resilience of widows still grinding through the turf even as the economic realities toughen.

We must rise up against the injustices faced by millions of widows, their dependents and sundry inhumane and obsolete widowhood practices. I urge us to continue to identify the condition of widows in our area and support as many as possible.
