The World Sickle Cell Day (WSCD) is observed annually to increase public knowledge and an understanding of sickle cell disease (SCD), including the challenges experienced by patients, their families and caregivers.
In accordance with the theme of this year's celebration, "Shine The Light on Sickle Cell", we must take cognisance of the increasing number of babies born every year with severe forms of hemoglobin disease such as SCD.
Today, I invite concerned bodies to begin the needed conversations about this genetic disorder and the challenges those with SCD face by understanding and supporting their needs.
Happy WSCD, 2021.
