It was a memorable and inspiring occasion that showcased unity at the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration held at the Federal Polytechnic Nekede Mini Stadium on March 25, 2025. I was represented at the event by the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, UNJP, who attended as the Special Guest of Honour. The celebration highlighted empowerment and reinforced the far-reaching impact of supporting women across the state. Delivering remarks on this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Give to Gain,” Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu described it as a call for teamwork, mutual support, and collaboration—not only in sports but also across education, science, and leadership. She further acknowledged the contributions of organizations such as FAWE Nigeria, WITED, OWSD, and the Centre for Gender Studies for their continued efforts in advancing government initiatives and uplifting vulnerable groups. In her welcome address, the host and Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Dr. (Mrs.) Basilia Nkemdirim Igbokwe, emphasized that the theme calls for intentional investment in women. She noted that empowering women should not be seen as charity, but as a strategic investment that yields lasting benefits for society. A major highlight of the celebration was a friendly football match between the women’s teams of Federal Polytechnic Nekede and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education. Both sides displayed impressive skill and sportsmanship, with Alvan Ikoku securing victory by a lone goal to claim the trophy. Medals were also presented to all participating players in recognition of their efforts. The Mini Stadium was alive with excitement as women from both institutions, alongside students, members of Imo women’s groups, Student Union Government leaders, and distinguished guests, gathered to witness the meaningful celebration, demonstrating solidarity and the collective spirit of empowerment.
