In commemoration of International Women’s Day 2026, I joined Her Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Oluremi Tinubu, CON, the First Lady of Nigeria, alongside my sister First Ladies in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on March 7, 2026. The event, which saw the women of Akwa Ibom turn out in great numbers, focused on the global theme: “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.” In her address, the First Lady described this year’s theme as a vital call to action, noting that ensuring access to education, economic empowerment, health, and social protection is an investment in our collective future. “This year’s theme is a call to action. Protecting the rights of women and girls by ensuring access to education, economic empowerment, health, social protection, and equity is an investment in our collective future. I encourage every woman here to be a positive tool for change in your homes, businesses, and communities. When women lead with purpose, the entire nation feels the impact,” Her Excellency remarked. She further noted that the reforms initiated by the current administration are designed to create a lasting legacy of prosperity, adding: “A house is not built in a day, but when the foundation is solid, the structure will stand the test of time. Let us remain united and focused.” A significant highlight was the formal endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and State Governor Umo Eno for second terms in office, alongside the Senate President’s return to the Senate, by the women of Akwa Ibom State. Prior to the rally, Her Excellency visited Ikono LGA to commission an ultra-modern Senior Citizens Center named in her honour. Conceptualized by the late wife of the State Governor, Pastor Patience Eno, the center will provide senior citizens with access to healthcare, recreation, and social support.
