I had the honour of joining Her Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Oluremi Tinubu, CON, the First Lady of Nigeria, alongside my colleagues from the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum and other women from across Nigeria, at an Interfaith Breaking of Fast (Iftar/Lent) on March 5, 2026, at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.
In her address, the First Lady noted the significance of the simultaneous Christian Lenten season and Muslim Ramadan fast, describing it as a divine call for unity. “Since the Ramadan fast and the Lenten season began together, it was like God was speaking to us as a nation,” she said, noting that this alignment serves as a testament to the necessity of harmonious living.
She highlighted peaceful personal coexistence as a vital counter to insecurity and division, urging us to serve with “excellence, compassion, and integrity.”
Drawing from her nearly four-decade interfaith marriage to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, she spoke passionately about religious harmony.
The gathering brought together an array of distinguished women, including former First Lady of Nigeria, H.E. Dame Patience Jonathan; the Wife of the Vice President, H.E. Hajia Nana Shettima; the Wife of the Senate President, H.E. Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio; Mrs Fatima Tajudeen Abbas; as well as female members of the National Assembly, judges, ministers, and many other distinguished women.
