Today, June 13, 2021 is International Albinism Awareness Day; a day designated by the United Nations General Assembly, to create awareness about the plight of individuals living with albinism and the unwarranted discrimination targeted at them.
The Corona virus pandemic has intensified the discrimination and marginalisation of people with albinism. According to the European External Action Service, "systematic violations of their right to health continue, while serious human rights violations, arising from accusations of witchcraft and ritual attacks, have increased." This global issue, which is very common in Africa, estimates 700 cases of attacks and killings of people with albinism in Sub-Saharan Africa over the last 10 years.
In line with this year's theme - #StrengthBeyondAllOdds, I align myself with the condemnation all crimes against persons with albinism and urge for effective investigation when they occur. Today, let us stand up for people with albinism around the world, supporting them in their fight for a life free of violence, discrimination and stigmatisation.
