It is deeply disheartening to learn that harmful traditional practices against widows; practices long since abrogated and prohibited, still persist in pockets across our state. Yesterday, I received in audience a widow from Awo-Omamma in the Oru East LGA. Following her husband's passing after a protracted illness, she was victimized and subjected to dehumanizing and obnoxious treatment before the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare intervened. The family members accused her of causing her husband’s death and attempted to force her to drink and bathe with the water used in washing his corpse. Fortunately, timely efforts were made to avert this cruel and harmful traditional practice. I have reiterated my stance against the ill-treatment of vulnerable women in our society. Beyond seeking justice, I provided her with the necessary support to care for the children left behind by her late husband. We must continue to protect the dignity of every woman, eradicating these archaic customs and ensuring that no widow in our state suffers such indignity.
