I had the distinct honour of representing Her Excellency, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, CON, the First Lady of Nigeria and National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative, at the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) in Imo State, held at the Government House, Owerri, Imo State, on December 16, 2025. The third consecutive edition of the scheme, themed “Finding Joy in Old Age,” supported two hundred and fifty (250) vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 years and above in the State and across all the 36 states of the Federation, the Federal Capital Territory, as well as veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), with the sum of two hundred thousand naira (₦200,000) each. The beneficiaries also received free medical check-ups and treatments. In her address, Her Excellency acknowledged the importance of prioritising our elderly citizens, especially during the festive season, to ensure they live their twilight years in comfort, good health, and dignity. She noted that ageing gracefully is not merely about longevity, but about being surrounded by love, support, and respect. She further encouraged them to continue nurturing both their bodies and minds through regular exercise and meaningful engagement. I commend Her Excellency, who, through the Renewed Hope Initiative, has continued to celebrate and demonstrate genuine care for our elderly men and women, recognizing their invaluable contributions to nation-building, providing immediate relief, and fostering a compassionate and inclusive society that prioritises the well-being of our senior citizens.
