Child abuse is a grave violation of human rights that will not be tolerated. It steals the innocence of our children, corrodes the trust that holds families together, and severely endangers the lives of victims. Yesterday, acting on prompt information, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, UNJP, and her team, intervened in a distressing case in Osina, Ideato North LGA of Imo State, involving the abuse of a 5-year-old child by her guardian. Information revealed that the woman used a candle to burn the child's back and private parts, and submerged both of her hands in boiling water until the skin peeled off. The perpetrator also used hot candle wax to disfigure the child’s body. The child will undergo two major corrective surgeries, with all expenses covered by the Imo State Health Insurance free medical care program of the Imo State Government. Furthermore, the child's welfare will be managed by my office. I urge all parents and guardians to refrain from dehumanizing their wards or household helpers. The Imo State Government will not condone any act of violence against any child, and perpetrators will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We extend our gratitude to the Imo State Police Command, Chidiebube Okeoma, and everyone who assisted in protecting the victim and bringing this matter to light. The case has been given the necessary attention, and the culprit will be charged to court to face the full wrath of the law.
