During a courtesy visit to H.E. Prince Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Ogun State, ahead of the commissioning of the new Breast Cancer Screening Centre in Abeokuta, I made a heartfelt plea for the inclusion of free cancer screening under the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme and the establishment of a cancer health fund to support vulnerable patients. Governor Abiodun welcomed the plea, calling it a good cause, and committed to supporting both initiatives. The visit, held on October 21, 2025, was part of a wider breast cancer awareness campaign in partnership with Roche Nigeria, aimed at promoting early detection as a critical step in reducing cancer-related patients by advocating for routine cancer screening to be included in State health insurance schemes. Alongside my sisters, H.E. Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, President-Elect of the Union for International Cancer Control, and H.E. Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, First Lady of Ogun State, I engaged with Roche representatives; including Dr. Ladi Hameed, General Manager; Dr. Bolarinwa Oyedeji, Medical Director; Pharm. Terseer Sar, Head of Access and Policy; Ms. Halima Okafor, Patient Engagement Specialist; and Doris Duke, Healthcare Systems Partner, Communications and Public Affairs; to emphasize the importance of public-private partnerships in delivering accessible cancer care. We commend the Ogun State Government and Roche for their shared commitment to strengthening health systems. This collaboration sets a new standard for cancer care in Nigeria and brings us closer to our goal of ensuring that no life is lost to a preventable disease.
