World Breastfeeding Week is commemorated during the first seven days of August to amplify the benefits that come with it. This year's theme, "Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems," focuses on the importance of supporting breastfeeding mothers and creating a sustainable environment that allows them to breastfeed with ease. Breastfeeding provides babies with optimal nutrients needed for growth, strengthening their immune systems and promoting cognitive development. Beyond nutrition, breastfeeding fosters a deep emotional connection between mothers and their babies while lowering the risk of diseases for both. The practice also offers mothers protection against breast and ovarian cancers while aiding postpartum recovery. Creating sustainable support systems requires collective action. Let us stand together to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding. Every drop of this precious gift given to a child is one of the greatest acts of maternal love.
