It was an exhilarating two-day First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) 2025 event held in Lagos on June 27th and 28th, 2025, celebrating FLAC's decade of impact. FLAC brings together the spouses of current and former state governors across Nigeria, dedicated to raising awareness and improving cancer care in the country.
To strengthen our efforts in charting a strategic path forward in the nation's fight against cancer, the first day featured FLAC's Mid-Year Meeting. The meeting included discussions on policy advocacy, the screening of a cervical cancer documentary titled "What I Don't Know Won't Kill Me" aimed at enhancing public awareness, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FLAC and the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) to foster a more coordinated and multi-sectoral response to cancer challenges, and my election as FLAC Chairperson, succeeding Her Excellency Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, the President-elect of UICC - Union for International Cancer Control .
The two-day event culminated in an 'Evening with FLAC,' celebrating survivorship, advocacy, and collaboration for accelerating the quality of cancer care services in Nigeria. The evening celebrated 10 cancer survivors and their families, featured the induction of friends of FLAC committed to championing improved cancer awareness, and marked the launch of the FLAC Book, a compendium detailing FLAC's patient journeys, stories of resilience, and the support provided by cancer-focused non-profit organizations within FLAC.
Through FLAC, we are not merely addressing a disease; we are restoring hope, empowering communities, and saving lives. Thanks to our partners, most especially Roche and others like NICRAT, together we will continue to advocate, save lives, and create a future where no Nigerian faces cancer alone.
