Recognizing the growing impact of cancer and the urgent need for healthcare solutions, the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) gathered for its 2025 Mid-Year Meeting in Lagos on June 27, 2025, to strengthen our efforts in charting a strategic path forward in the nation's fight against this formidable disease.
FLAC brings together the spouses of current and former state governors across Nigeria, dedicated to improving cancer care in the country. Our work focuses on raising awareness, improving access to screening and treatment, and mobilizing resources to effectively combat cancer.
Discussions on policy advocacy and a cervical cancer documentary, titled "What I Don't Know Won't Kill Me," aimed at enhancing public awareness, were key parts of the meeting. A major highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FLAC and the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) to foster a more coordinated and multi-sectoral response to cancer challenges.
As we work to ensure continuity in our mission, the meeting concluded with my election as Chairperson, taking over from Her Excellency Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, the President-elect of UICC - Union for International Cancer Control. Together, FLAC will work collectively to transform cancer into a disease that is no longer feared, recognizing that health is fundamental to our nation's prosperity and development.
