2025 WORLD SICKLE CELL DAY

Sickle cell disease affects millions of people globally, yet it remains one of the most neglected genetic conditions worldwide. Today marks World Sickle Cell Day, an occasion to honour the resilience of millions living with sickle cell disease and to acknowledge that this condition demands our attention, understanding, and action. Those living with sickle cell disease face daily challenges, including unpredictable pain crises and frequent hospitalizations. However, their resilience inspires us all as they refuse to be defined by their condition. While silence breeds ignorance, knowledge preserves lives. We must advocate boldly for greater awareness. Sickle cell disease is inherited, not contagious. Early detection through newborn screening can dramatically improve outcomes. Genetic counseling before marriage enables couples to understand their carrier status. Simple blood tests can reveal whether one carries the sickle cell trait, thereby facilitating informed family planning decisions. Today, we commit to raising awareness and ensuring that everyone living with sickle cell disease receives the care they deserve. We stand with patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare providers in addressing this disease. Together, we can transform hope into healing and advocacy into action. #WSCD2025 #SickleCellAwareness
