Annually, May 23 is observed as the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, aimed at raising awareness about this medical condition that affects women and girls of reproductive age. An obstetric fistula is a serious injury from childbirth that creates a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or bowel. This happens when labour takes too long and becomes obstructed, and the woman cannot get medical help quickly enough. Women with this injury leak urine or faeces and cannot control it. This causes health problems and makes women feel depressed and isolated. Every woman and girl in the State possesses the fundamental right to health, particularly sexual and reproductive health. With improved healthcare facilities in the State and Maternal and Child Healthcare as a priority, the end of fistula is within reach in our State. Obstetric fistula is completely preventable with proper medical attention and informed decisions about sexual and reproductive health. Together, we can build a future where no woman suffers from this preventable condition.
