At the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on May 21, 2025, I joined the First Lady of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator (Dr.) Oluremi Tinubu CON, alongside other governors' spouses at a Charity Gala Dinner organized by the Spouses of Heads of Missions in Nigeria. The event was a fundraiser for Five Cowries Arts Education Initiative, an NGO founded by Ms. Polly Alakija that works to improve learning outcomes through arts. The initiative aims to support programmes that focus on global issues including conservation, citizenship, and health, using arts as an advocacy tool to educate children and women, especially in rural communities.
During the event, the First Lady commended the Spouses of Heads of Missions for not just accompanying their husbands to their duty posts here in Nigeria, but also becoming part of the success stories being recorded in the country through their various activities. These activities include renovating schools, assisting hospitals, and supporting poor people in business, all of which have lasting impacts in critical sectors of society, including education. Her Excellency urged all attendees to support the Five Cowries Initiative through financial contributions, advocacy, or partnerships. On behalf of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), she pledged ₦100 million to fund 5,000 art exhibitions across Nigeria. Mrs. Lucrecia Downer, spouse of the British High Commissioner to Jamaica, in her welcome remarks, pointed out that the promotion of arts as a tool in education helps strengthen learning outcomes. She explained that this informed the decision of the Spouses of Heads of Missions to assist the Five Cowries Art Education Initiative in raising more funds to strengthen art works in the country, enhance learning, and provide broader access to education in rural and underserved communities in Nigeria.
